David’s Bio

Welcome, I am David, studio owner, this is a short story of how this all came to be…

I unknowingly stumbled onto my love of photography when I was just eleven years old. I was given an old camera of my Father’s to use on a fifth grade field trip to Mystic Seaport. I got my start in photography photographing those old ships and some of my school friends that day. At that time I didn’t realize that old borrowed camera would eventually lead me to a modern-day digital camera, that became an extension of my left arm, and lead to a career in wedding photography.

I continued to use this old camera on occasion when I could get some film and save up my allowance to pay for processing.  I would anxiously wait a week or so to see the results when my film was returned to the drug store turned into images, images that started to get attention from the people who viewed them. There would be comments like “That’s a great picture”, “Nice photo”. I have to admit, I started to like the compliments, and strived to get more, by working improve my photographs. This effort to improve has spanned over three decades of classes, seminars, training, practice and still continues today.

A few years passed, I received a Polaroid instant camera for Christmas when I was 14, with one package of film, holding just 8 pictures. The box of film was used up in less than three hours.  Many more were bought over Christmas vacation, and over the next few years. Everything from pets, family, cars, fire trucks and scenery were photographed in both color and black and white.

I used that Polaroid camera all through high school and I still have it today.  A few years passed, I married my best friend & soul mate Hope. We eventually attended several weddings as guests, and yes I brought a camera with us, and yes I took photographs. As in the past, my photographs taken at the weddings as a guest, started to get noticed. Much to my pleasure, the compliments began. My photographs were often compared to the photos  from their photographer, and often were said to be equal or better. I was on to something.

An idea soon hatched. In August of 1981, with my wife’s full support, I put an advertisement in the local weekly, and soon booked my first wedding as a professional photographer, and another for a grand total of two weddings for the remainder of 1981, Portraits by David Photography was born. The results of my first wedding were good, and now armed with a sample album, I was able to book over 20 weddings for 1982.

The number of weddings continued to grow, my bookings grew steadily into the 90’s when my oldest child was ready to join me as my assistant. Having four children, all eventually becoming involved in the business Portraits by David has grown to what it is today, a family run business, employing only trusted family members.

We are truly gifted to have photography in our blood, and grateful for the ability to capture and preserve beautiful memories for those who have us photograph their weddings and events. Our passion for wedding photography is genuine; we truly love being involved in events that are so happy and full of love.different. I offer our special gift and talent. We are anxious to be your wedding photographer.
